STUDIO MALICK

Malian photographer Malick Sidibé has been working as a photographer for over half a century. Who does that? Another accomplishment is his ability to see the joy through his lens. His Black & White studio portraits have become iconic that have told a story of young Mali across the globe. The ability to inspire the youth through art is a gift that Malick receives generously. His work can be seen currently at Images Festival in Vevey, Switzerland. If you can make the trip pick up Dolce Vita Africana documentary where Mr. Sidibé shows his studio and prior portrait subjects. -Safari-

One of the great things to witness is when two completely different generations are able to co-exist. We just got this video of the Jolly Boys rocking out their Mento vibe in London's Notting Hill. Also, have to mention that the elders were keeping their courting skills sharp. -Safari-

THIS IS ENGLAND

"This Is England" written and directed by Shane Meadows is a true story based on events that took place during the directors childhood. This film examines the skinhead/punk movement of the 80's and its transition into the racist movement most are familiar with today. Illustrating the complex issue of immigration and cultural diversity in England's working class communities. The economic depression and England's engagement in the Falklands War set the backdrop for this 80's flashback, a time when 3.5 million Brits were unemployed. A great soundtrack tops it all off. RAT RACE

"Rat Race" by Bob Marley and the Wailers, off the 1976 release Rastaman Vibration. I remember my dad flipping this record from side A to B all day long as a child, this was one of my favorite tracks on that album. Even more relevant today...way too much worship is placed on money, "...in the abundance of water the fool is thirsty". seen.

Although the album's liner notes list multiple songwriters, including family friends and bandmembers, all songs were written by Marley. Marley was involved in a contractual dispute with his former publishing company, Cayman music.

Vincent Ford, a childhood friend from Jamaica, was given writing credit for "No Woman, No Cry" on the 1974 album Natty Dread, as well the songs "Crazy Baldheads" (with Marley's wife Rita), "Positive Vibration" and "Roots Rock Reggae" from the 1976 album Rastaman Vibration, along with "Inna De Red" and "Jah Bless" with Marley's son, Stephen.

Marley had not wanted his new songs to be associated with Cayman and it had been speculated, including in his obituary in The Independent, that he had put them in the names of his close friends and family members as a means of avoiding the contractual restrictions and as a way to provide lasting help to family and close friends.

GARDEN HOUSE, SINGAPORE

"Maximum Garden House" by Formwerkz Architects. It would appear that Singapore is at the forefront of the modern home movement, check previous posts Ong & Ong and Singapore Gold. With this home the objective was to maximize the limited garden space on a narrow plot of land and create an interior that would allow the owners to keep an eye on their two young kids. Solution...rooftop/wall gardens and an open concept interior that allowed for lots of light and visibility. The roof top terrace/deck is a brilliant addition, a beautiful use of space. -Dread Perry-

South Africa's smooth house music warrior Black Coffee brings another vocalist to the table for his latest video/single Crazy. Black Coffee's videos tend to look quite repetitive but the music makes up for it. -Safari-

BATIDA RADIO

Batida started off as a weekly radio show on Portugal's 'Antena 3' station and quickly evolved into an international phenomenon. It's host DJ Mpula released 'Dance Mwangolê' last fall, an eclectic mix highlighting everything the show has come to represent...a mashup of Kwaito, Kuduro, Dancehall and Brasilian funk. I thought "Puxa" would make a nice introduction to the Radio Fazuma sound. Rudie approved. -Dread Perry-

Usually, giving you a full government name is a sign of being a serial killer. So Lewis Floyd Henry is a major threat to any song you felt sacred. Equipped with miniature drum kit, amp mic and electric guitar, the approach to his busking is hard hitting instruments with vocals to match. On the last weekend of August in the United Kingdom they give the people a Bank Holiday so they can squeeze out the last bits of summer. For some it's a chance to get away from the city, for many it's a chance to experience the Caribbean at one of the biggest carnivals in the world. The parade goes around in a square but inside the route you have the hottest soundsystems blazing up the riddims from every genre. Vanya Taylor(now after seeing the video has the look to match the voice). This throwback video makes it feel like we're in the 80's and was that ever a great time for the UK music scene.
