Malian photographer Malick Sidibé has been working as a photographer for over half a century. Who does that? Another accomplishment is his ability to see the joy through his lens. His Black & White studio portraits have become iconic that have told a story of young Mali across the globe. The ability to inspire the youth through art is a gift that Malick receives generously. His work can be seen currently at Images Festival in Vevey, Switzerland. If you can make the trip pick up Dolce Vita Africana documentary where Mr. Sidibé shows his studio and prior portrait subjects. -Safari-
"This Is England" written and directed by Shane Meadows is a true story based on events that took place during the directors childhood. This film examines the skinhead/punk movement of the 80's and its transition into the racist movement most are familiar with today. Illustrating the complex issue of immigration and cultural diversity in England's working class communities. The economic depression and England's engagement in the Falklands War set the backdrop for this 80's flashback, a time when 3.5 million Brits were unemployed. A great soundtrack tops it all off. A must see - check your local video store. -Dread Perry-

Update: apparently Shane Meadows has finished a four-part series "This Is England '86" which catches up with Shaun years later. "Rat Race" by Bob Marley and the Wailers, off the 1976 release Rastaman Vibration. I remember my dad flipping this record from side A to B all day long as a child, this was one of my favorite tracks on that album. Even more relevant today...way too much worship is placed on money, "...in the abundance of water the fool is thirsty". seen.
-Dread Perry-

interesting note via wikipedia:

Although the album's liner notes list multiple songwriters, including family friends and bandmembers, all songs were written by Marley. Marley was involved in a contractual dispute with his former publishing company, Cayman music.

Vincent Ford, a childhood friend from Jamaica, was given writing credit for "No Woman, No Cry" on the 1974 album Natty Dread, as well the songs "Crazy Baldheads" (with Marley's wife Rita), "Positive Vibration" and "Roots Rock Reggae" from the 1976 album Rastaman Vibration, along with "Inna De Red" and "Jah Bless" with Marley's son, Stephen.

Marley had not wanted his new songs to be associated with Cayman and it had been speculated, including in his obituary in The Independent, that he had put them in the names of his close friends and family members as a means of avoiding the contractual restrictions and as a way to provide lasting help to family and close friends.
Dread Perryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04715291261967241230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6743162095356129750.post-76052197868504723562010-09-02T20:43:00.000-04:002010-09-02T20:43:14.982-04:00GARDEN HOUSE, SINGAPORE
"Maximum Garden House" by Formwerkz Architects. It would appear that Singapore is at the forefront of the modern home movement, check previous posts Ong & Ong and Singapore Gold. With this home the objective was to maximize the limited garden space on a narrow plot of land and create an interior that would allow the owners to keep an eye on their two young kids. Solution...rooftop/wall gardens and an open concept interior that allowed for lots of light and visibility. The roof top terrace/deck is a brilliant addition, a beautiful use of space. -Dread Perry-
For some it's a chance to get away from the city, for many it's a chance to experience the Caribbean at one of the biggest carnivals in the world. The parade goes around in a square but inside the route you have the hottest soundsystems blazing up the riddims from every genre. Just wrapping up on Monday night, we've decided it would be only right to put some pics together. -Safari-
No delay on this video we have it straight out the box. Just as a disclaimer, I've been a huge supporter of The Fives funky banger What You Do ft. Vanya Taylor(now after seeing the video has the look to match the voice). This throwback video makes it feel like we're in the 80's and was that ever a great time for the UK music scene. Effortlessly mixing the foreign influence from the caribbean with the punk/mod aesthetic. I really hope this team gets to break more than vinyl records, Straight Rudie! -Safari-Safarihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15933706778975230144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6743162095356129750.post-34614274232696788022010-08-31T11:32:00.003-04:002010-08-31T15:52:15.914-04:00LIVE NEW CUBA SOUND
World renowned crate-digger and culture ambassador Gilles Peterson will always bring you to a new world. Whether it was the brave new world of hip-hop in the 80s, the experimental acid-jazz of the 90's, progressing into the sounds of Brazil and Africa towards the new millenium. Now his most recent project has connected him with cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca. Live New Cuba Sound brings together the traditional sound made familiar from the time of The Buena Vista Social Club while fusing salsa, reggaeton & hip-hop to take 2 great generations forward with one movement. Check the video above for the footage from London's show. -Safari-Safarihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15933706778975230144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6743162095356129750.post-60049176927146059412010-08-30T20:07:00.007-04:002010-08-30T20:49:42.920-04:00HOLDING YOU DOWN (GOIN' IN CIRCLES)
"Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)" by Jazmine Sullivan. It's only right I post the visuals. One of the most slept on ladies in the game. Vocally phenomenal. Act like you already knew. -Dread Perry-
side note: if they really wanted to capture the musical era of the sample (Nas/The Firm, Affirmative Action) they would have recreated the mid 90's not the late 80's. "California Switchback 2010" by Vans. 2010 fall/winter release. My personal choice would be the black leather option. The Switchback is popular as of late, a little clunky for my liking, but these right here...top-shelf. After all, the fall weather calls for something with a little more bulk. -Dread Perry-Dread Perryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04715291261967241230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6743162095356129750.post-67463874411488214932010-08-29T17:06:00.001-04:002010-08-29T17:07:38.891-04:00ALEX BARTSCH
